Support a Newcomer

The Government of Canada requires all newcomers to be supported by a volunteer settlement group to help them adjust to life in Canada. These groups—made up of five or more people—play a critical role in helping LGBTQ+ refugees sponsored by Sponsorship Agreement Holders (SAHs) find not just safety, but community.
Think of everything you might need if you had to start over in a new country: a friendly conversation over tea, guidance on using public transit, navigating healthcare, enrolling in English classes, or simply finding an affirming LGBTQ+ community. That’s the kind of care and connection settlement groups provide.

Since 2021, Hive has helped more than 60 people get to freedom. Eager to give back to the organization that helped them, these newcomers have incredible stories to tell, and many more friends and family to help back home. Raise Funds for Hive

Donations and partnerships are critical to Hive’s ability to deliver life-saving support and streamline pathways for permanent resettlement for at-risk LGBTQ refugees. Calls and texts from desperate LGBTQ+ people arrive every day, and Hive’s wait list is growing. On average, it takes about two years for a refugee to make the journey from fleeing Afghanistan to finally arriving in Canada as a newcomer. During that time, the approximate cost of support per person is:
  • Documentation: $10,000 USD / $14,000 CAD
  • Monthly stipends at $300 USD / $425 CAD to cover rent, food, medical, etc. = $7,200 USD / $10,200 CAD
  • Private Sponsorship Fee: $14,500 USD - $22,000 / $20,000 - $30,000 CAD, depending upon the Canadian city
