What We Do

Our Work

Hive builds relationships at both ends of the refugee journey to best address refugee needs in the middle.

We:

  • maintain open channels of communication with LGBTQ+ Afghans under threat of violence and death
  •  interview potential refugees and gather evidence of risk
  • help LGBTQ+ refugees attain legal documentation
  • send monthly stipends for safe housing, medications, food, English courses and other needs
  • build partnerships with sponsorship agreement holder (SAH) organizations throughout Canada and find immigration openings for vetted, at-risk refugees
  • complete paperwork and applications as necessary and guide refugees through the bureaucratic process
  • curate partnerships with community groups and individuals to raise funds and develop volunteer settlement teams across Canada

How We Support Each Journey

Every journey toward safety is different—but many follow a path shaped by urgency, uncertainty, and hope. Our work focuses on supporting individuals through three critical stages, ensuring dignity and care at every step.

Leaving Unsafe Conditions

For many, the journey begins with the difficult decision to leave home due to risk, persecution, or instability.

We support individuals during this stage by:

  • Helping identify safe pathways out of high-risk environments
  • Connecting individuals with trusted networks and guidance
  • Prioritizing safety, discretion, and informed decision-making
Our approach respects the complexity of each situation and the courage it takes to take the first step.

Navigating Periods of Uncertainty

After leaving, individuals often face long and uncertain waiting periods—sometimes in unfamiliar or temporary locations.
During this stage, we:
  • Provide ongoing guidance and emotional support
  • Help individuals access essential resources where possible
  • Maintain communication and continuity of care
We recognize that this phase can be the most challenging, requiring resilience, patience, and consistent support.

Reaching Safety and Rebuilding Lives

Arriving in a safe country is a significant milestone—but it is only the beginning of a new chapter

We support this transition by:

  • Assisting with resettlement and community integration
  • Connecting individuals with local support networks
  • Encouraging long-term stability, independence, and belonging
Our goal is not only safety, but the opportunity for individuals to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose.
